How to Set Up a Healthy Work-from-Home Space Without Spending a Lot of Money

How to Set Up a Healthy Work-from-Home Space

There’s no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has turned all aspects of our lives upside down in the most unimaginable ways, including how we work. Who would’ve thought that most of us would soon be spending working hours inside our own rooms?

When it comes to creating a work-from-home setup, it’s more than just packing the right table and finding stable access to the Internet. A space that promotes productivity is also needed, one that doesn’t interfere with the life of other family members.

If you’re one of the many workers struggling to create a workspace that drives productivity, worry no more because we have you covered!

Here are some tips for building a better workspace at home without spending a lot of money.

Keep your room clutter-free and well-ventilated

One of the first things you have to do is make space for a larger table or an office chair by decluttering your space and getting rid of items that aren’t needed.

It also needs no explaining that trying to focus in a disorganised room is extremely hard, which then affects your productivity for the entire day. Keeping the room clean is an effective way of removing possible distractions.

On top of that, you’d want to position your workspace near the window to get some fresh air while working. It’s important to keep our windows open at all times in order to get proper ventilation.

Another way to improve the ventilation in our rooms is by installing a standing or wall fan while keeping the windows open. That’s according to the technicians at Ceiling Fan Repair in Singapore.

That would make it easier for the fresh air outside to enter our rooms and the air inside to go out, keeping us feeling fresh and cool while writing some work emails.

Set up proper lighting

Good lighting is something that most people forget to consider when creating a home workspace. Ideally, there needs to be sufficient indirect light to illuminate your workspace and prevent eye strain while reading papers.

As we mentioned earlier, choosing a spot near the window would be a cost-efficient way to get proper lighting. If that isn’t possible, we recommend getting a floor lamp or table room to create a well-lit desk.

Another tip is not to place a table lamp right next to the monitor, as it’d compete with its light and create possible glare that could hurt the eyes. Look for a location where it isn’t in your direct field of vision as you’re using a computer.

Make sure that everything is within reach

According to a study by a workplace consultancy firm, taking ownership of our workplace and keeping everything within reach could increase productivity by up to 32%.

Some of the most productive workplaces, regardless if it’s an office or home setup, are designed in a way that every valuable that an employee needs is within reach. There’s no need to stand up and go to another room, which then affects our ability to focus.

For example, if you need to print a hundred pages, then ensure that the printer, papers, and replacement ink/toner is placed on the table because every time you have to look for an item, your productivity is abruptly halted.

Create boundaries with other family members

In order to create a healthy and stress-free working environment at home, the cooperation of other people inside your home is needed. You need to have a serious discussion with them about your desired working conditions.

You might want to establish working hours where everything is expected to be quiet to allow other people in the house to focus.

Another effective way to set boundaries is by posting signs on your door when you’re working and can’t afford to be disturbed. It allows other family members to know that they can’t knock or call your name.

If there’s an urgent concern that needs your attention, suggesting to send email to get your attention would be more practical, since most of us are glued to our emails.

Anyway, that’s it for our simple and cost-efficient tips on how to create a healthy work environment. Do you have any experience working from home? Tell us your own ways of being productive at home!
